Supporting life scientists displaced by armed conflicts

Application deadline:
15 February 2023

Benefits

EMBO provides grants for host institutions in EMBC Member States with Increasing Participation Status (Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, Slovenia, and Turkey) to issue a grant via their host institutes to selected grantees.

Funding rates including tax and social costs

PhD students: up to 2,000 euros per month (24,000 euros  per year)

Postdocs: up to 3, 000 euros per month (36,000 euros per year)

Professors and group leaders: up to 4,000 euros per month (48,000 euros per year)

These amounts are the maximum grants per month (total per year) paid as a subsidy to the costs of employing the researcher at the host institution. We expect grantees to be paid at the rate that is customary at the host institution for the position offered, according to the local rules and regulations.

The funds will be transferred in full to the host institution at the start of the grant. The EMBO Solidarity Grant does not cover any overheads.

Unspent funds must be returned to EMBO at the end of the grant duration, at the latest after one year of tenure. On a case-by-case basis, unspent funds can used to extend the grant at the host institution.

Grant duration

The grants are awarded for one year, a further year of extension may be possible, depending on funds being available.

EMBO Laboratory Leadership courses

Grantees who are post-docs or group leaders can apply to participate in an EMBO Laboratory Leadership course free of charge.

Grantees who are PhD students can apply to participate in an appropriate training course offered by EMBO Solutions.

The grant is intended to cover the cost of living in the host country. The EMBO Solidarity Grant does not cover bench fees, overheads, funds for consumables or any other financial benefits to the supervisor or the receiving institute. The stipend rate depends on the country being visited and the entry-level and might be subject to taxation.

EMBO cannot advise on national tax regulations and we recommend grantees contact the relevant authorities in the host country.

Child and childcare allowance

For children under the age of six, fellows can claim support for incurred childcare costs up to the amount of 2,500 euros per grant year and per child.
