Eligibility

Eligibility requirements

Applications may be submitted by organizers of a scientific event who wish to include a policy talk. To be eligible, the following requirements must be met: 

  • The speaker must deliver a talk on a science policy issue, for example the ethical, economic, political or legal dimensions of scientific developments, or a research policy issue, such as funding policy, national science policy, research assessment or research integrity. 
  • The speaker may be a scientist, policy practitioner, sociologist, ethicist, or journalist.
  • The talk must be part of the main programme of the scientific event and scheduled in a plenary session, not in parallel with other sessions.
  • Only one speaker per event is eligible for funding.

Eligible costs

Eligible costs must be paid in advance by the organizer or speaker and will be reimbursed after the event.

  • Maximum funding is 800 euros for speakers travelling within Europe and 1200 euros for intercontinental travel.
  • Only the speaker’s travel and accommodation costs are eligible for reimbursement.  
  • Not eligible are subsistence costs, including meals; honoraria or speaker fees; travel insurance, or cancellation/change fees.
  • Eligible travel costs include local travel, such as public transport, taxis and rideshare, as well as long-distance travel by train, bus or air. 
  • Reimbursement is limited to standard second-class train or bus tickets and standard economy-class airfare.
  • In line with EMBO’s sustainability commitments, speakers are encouraged to use ground travel for journeys of seven hours or less. For local transport, public transport should be used where possible.
  • Accommodation costs can be reimbursed for a maximum of two nights.
