Selection

Selection criteria

Although a geographically balanced set of selected network members is desirable, selection is primarily based on the strength, originality, and competitiveness of the applicant and their research. The Selection Committee looks for researchers with well-defined, high-quality research projects and an innovative, forward-looking vision with the potential to lead to significant breakthroughs in their field.

Aspects considered by the EMBO Global Investigator Network Committee are:

  • Proposed research
  • Group and research environment
  • Financial and intellectual independence.

Selection process

The selection process involves the following steps:

  • Pre-selection: The EMBO Global Investigator Network Committee selects a group of applicants for an online interview. The applications of shortlisted applicants are sent for confidential review to an EMBO Member with expertise in the applicant’s research area.

  • Interview: Pre-selected applicants attend an online interview with a subset of the Global Investigator Network Committee. Applicants deliver a presentation summarising their ongoing and future projects and their research vision, followed by a discussion.

  • Committee meeting: Following the interviews, the committee meets to make the final selection decision. All applicants are informed of the outcome of their application by email.

In the event of a rejection, interviewed applicants receive feedback from the committee on their written application and interview performance.
