Selection

All completed applications will be acknowledged by email.

All applications will be checked at the EMBO Office for compliance with the selection criteria. Applications proposing short-term placements for the purpose of content production will be rejected at this stage.

Applicants rejected at this initial selection phase will be notified of the reasons for the rejection by email, and they may be able to re-apply for the following annual assessment cycle.

All completed and valid applications will be reviewed by at least two members of the Advisory Board against the selection criteria, and will be ranked by:

  • The quality, ambition, intended goals and feasibility of the proposal
  • Journalistic quality of the submitted work samples.

In case of significant differences in the evaluation by the assigned Advisory Board members, an additional board member’s opinion will be sought.

The scholarships available in the respective application period will be awarded according to the ranking of the respective applicants, and the funding available for the scheme at the time. The ranking of the Advisory Board and decisions of EMBO are not subject to review.
