Applicants must reside in an EMBC Member State, and their placement/s must also occur in an EMBC Member State. The placements must be in-person to maximize opportunities for learning and engagement. Virtual placements are not eligible.
If Fellows wish to undertake two or more placements at least one must be in a different EMBC Member State than the other/s. Applicants are not subject to any age restriction.
Journalists must be able to demonstrate relevant experience of working as an employed or freelance journalist as their main occupation and provide appropriate samples of their published or broadcast work. They must demonstrate to the Advisory Board’s satisfaction a genuine desire to broaden and deepen their knowledge of science, rather than seek support for immediate publication opportunities.
Life scientists seeking support to transition into full time (science) journalism must have a master’s degree or higher, and preferably in a life sciences discipline.
They must demonstrate to the Advisory Board’s satisfaction a genuine desire to transition into (science) journalism as a profession, including by providing suitable evidence of their prior reporting on the life sciences and/or associated disciplines.
Personal blog posts or social media postings, or publication in academic journals of commentary or reviews of research, are not considered sufficient evidence of prior journalism.
Fellows are expected to not undertake other work during the term of their fellowship. Journalists must not report on their host research institution during the term of their fellowship. It is not possible to extend the scholarship period.
