Journalists must submit:
- A proposal in English of a maximum of three pages:
- The proposal must explain how they intend to use the fellowship to broaden and deepen their knowledge of research, the process of research and/or relevant technologies in the life sciences and associated disciplines.
- The proposal must specify a nominated research institution/s and expected specific learning and knowledge outcomes. Fellows will be asked to provide to EMBO an assessment of their experience at the conclusion of their fellowship.
- The applicant should discuss their proposal with the proposed research institution/s prior to submitting their application, although formal written confirmation of acceptance by the institution/s is not required at the time of application.
- Confirmation that the sabbatical is focussed on the individual’s learning and long-term development as a science journalist and acknowledging they should not report from their host institution during their residency.
- Their curriculum vitae in English including their permanent residential address, email and mobile phone contact.
- Samples of previous journalism work which may be in any language, and which meet the requirements stated under Eligibility.
Researchers seeking to transition to journalism must submit:
- A proposal in English of a maximum of three pages:
- The proposal must demonstrate a genuine desire to transition from a research career to a career in journalism, and how the fellowship would contribute to improving their knowledge and practice of (science) journalism.
- The proposal should include a series of specific learning outcomes and possible outcomes of the fellowship.
- The proposal must confirm that the proposed placement will in the form of a full-time internship or similar in a mainstream media newsroom during which the successful applicant will be expected to produce published or broadcast science journalism.
- The proposal must specify a newsroom/s for the proposed placement/s. The applicant should discuss their proposal with the newsroom prior to submitting their application, although formal written confirmation of acceptance by the newsroom is not required at the time of application.
- Their curriculum vitae in English including their permanent residential address, email and mobile phone contact.
- Samples of previous journalism work which may be in any language, and which meet the requirements stated under Eligibility.
Successful applicants must organize their own placements. EMBO will provide written confirmation to successful applicants of a conditional offer subject to final confirmation from the relevant host institution / newsroom.
Applications will only be accepted via the EMBO application portal, and only fully completed applications will be considered.
The selection of Fellows and the awarding of fellowships takes place once a year although applications can be submitted at any time.
Fully completed applications must be registered in the EMBO application portal by 23:59 Central European Summer Time on 30 September of each year. Applicants will be notified by email of the outcome of the selection process by mid-November.
