EMBO congratulates nine life scientists on their selection as EMBO Global Investigators. New research published yesterday in The EMBO Journal reports that the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus can target human neurons with the potential to cause disease of the central nervous system (CNS). The research showed that the virus can enter tiny laboratory-developed 3D structures called brain organoids that replicate key aspects of the human brain and induce pathological effects similar to early stages of diseases of the CNS such as Alzheimer’s.
