EMBO Young Scientists’ Forum

The EMBO Young Scientists' Forum brings together EMBO Installation Grantees, EMBO Young Investigators and PhD students and postdoctoral researchers for an overview of the latest development in the life sciences.

The annual meeting takes place in one of the countries participating in the EMBO Installation Grants (Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Poland, Portugal and Turkey) and is organized by local Installation Grantees. It provides European PhD students, postdocs and junior investigators with the opportunity to interact with some of Europe's most promising young scientists.

Students and postdocs have the possibility to present their work as short talks and as posters. Poster sessions and a social event provide a friendly environment for informal discussions of the policies and practices for doing world-class science.

The next meeting will take place in 2018 at Bogazici University | Guney Campus, Istanbul, Turkey.

Find an Installation Grantee

The Installation Grantee database contains details of all people and projects supported by Installation Grants since their introduction in 2006.

Installation Grants

EMBO Installation Grants support early-career scientists establishing independent laboratories in one of five participating EMBC Member States that fund their respective grantees. At present, Installation Grant applications are accepted annually by the Czech Republic, Estonia, Poland, Portugal, Turkey and Lithuania with the aim of strengthening the life sciences in these countries.

The Installation Grants were launched in 2006. Installation Grantees are selected annually on the basis of high-quality research, and, together with the EMBO Young Investigators, form a prestigious network of Europe’s up-and-coming life scientists.

To date, 78 scientists have been selected as Installation Grantees. Information about the projects that have been funded each year and their recipients is available in the EMBO Installation Grantee database.

Selection process

The number of grants available each year is decided by the Strategic Installation Grant (SDIG) Board, which is made up of representatives from participating EMBC Members States. Selection of EMBO Installation Grantees is made by the EMBO Young Investigator Committee.

The selection process involves the following steps:

  • The pre-screening of applications: After this stage, approximately 50% of applicants are selected for an interview with an EMBO Member who is an expert in the applicant’s research area.
  • Ranking by the selection committee: Based on the above selection criteria, the EMBO Young Investigator Committee creates a ranked list of recommended recipients.
  • Final decision: The SDIG Board makes the final decision on the number of awards on the basis of recommendations from the selection committee.
  • All applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application by email shortly following the board meeting.

Research Integrity

EMBO expects responsible conduct of research from its awardees. All the research activities carried out shall be in compliance with fundamental ethical and research integrity principles.
