Seventy-one life scientists in 23 countries have been elected as EMBO Members, a lifelong honour that recognizes research excellence and exceptional achievements. This year’s cohort consists of 60 EMBO Members in member states of the EMBC, the intergovernmental organization that funds the main EMBO Programmes and activities, and 11 EMBO Associate Members in countries outside Europe. The new members become part of a global community of more than 2,200 life scientists.
“It is a pleasure to welcome the new EMBO Members and Associate Members. Their election celebrates their achievements and creativity. By contributing their unique perspectives and experiences, they will greatly strengthen the network of leading life scientists who are shaping the field,” says EMBO Director Fiona Watt.
As a membership organization, EMBO owes its reputation and impact to the quality and dedication of its community. EMBO Members serve on EMBO Council, Committees and Advisory Editorial Boards, and review funding applications. EMBO Associate Members add a global perspective to the organization. Collectively, members influence the direction of the life sciences and strengthen research communities in Europe and beyond. New members are selected through an annual nomination and election process, ensuring that EMBO Members continue to represent diverse research areas and emerging trends.
Many of this year’s new members have demonstrated their excellence in areas of fundamental research, such as ecology and evolution, epigenetics or structural biology. Others perform cutting-edge applied research, for example, in health informatics, immunopharmacology or oncology.
Of the 71 new members, 35 (49%) are women and 36 (51%) are men. They are based in 17 member states of the EMBC and six further countries.
The EMBO Members’ Meeting, a formal welcome and celebration of the new members, will take place in Heidelberg, Germany, from 30 September to 2 October 2026. A directory listing all members with affiliations and subject areas is available online.
