- Applicants must be active researchers at any career stage, with at least one year of graduate-level research experience or its equivalent at the time of submission.
- EMBO Scientific Exchange Grants are awarded for research exchanges between laboratories in EMBC Member States and EMBC/EMBO global partners (Chile, India, Singapore, Taiwan). The grants are not awarded for exchanges between two laboratories within the same country.
- Researchers funded by one of the following programmes of the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) ASPIRE, FOREST , PRESTO, ACT-X, ERATO, CREST are also eligible to apply for a Scientific Exchange Grant to go to a laboratory based in an EMBC Member State.
- Only in exceptional cases are grants awarded for research visits outside the countries listed above. For such cases, it is essential to provide a justification for why there is no appropriate expertise or technology in EMBC Member States or EMBC/EMBO global partners.
- Only applicants (of any nationality) working at an institute/university in an EMBC Member State, EMBC/EMBO global partners or funded by JST programmes (see above) are eligible to apply.
- Applications for the exclusive purpose of training in a technique will be considered if it fits within the context of the work carried out in the home laboratory.
- EMBO will not consider applications to extend visits that are funded by other programs.
- Applications to work with former colleagues, PhD or postdoc supervisors or to work in laboratories previously visited will not be considered.
- EMBO Scientific Exchange Grants are specifically designed to facilitate new collaborations and scientific exchanges. Applications to visit laboratories with existing or past collaborations (e.g., joint grants, co-publications, or previous exchanges) are not eligible.
- EMBO will not consider applications to attend courses, workshops, or symposia. Similarly, EMBO Scientific Grants do not provide additional funding for courses, conference travel, bench fees, overheads or any other expenses beyond travel costs between the laboratories involved and subsistence rates depending on the country visited.
- After completing the fellowship, applicants must immediately return to their home laboratory and stay for a minimum of six consecutive months. Proof of return is required via a signed letter in English from the home institution.
