The global EMBO community mourns the death of respected German bioinformatician and EMBO Member Peer Bork, who passed away on 16 January.
“Peer was a great scientist, an inspiring leader and a wonderful colleague,” EMBO Director Fiona Watt says. “Our thoughts are with his family and colleagues at this terrible time.”
Elected an EMBO Member in 2000, Bork contributed to the community as a leader, mentor and friend, and through positions on the Membership Committee and publications advisory board.
He was also Scientific Director of the Traversing European Coastlines (TREC) expedition, an EMBL-led multinational project to study ecosystem interactions, involving 90 institutions with the involvement of many members of the EMBO community.
Most recently he was Interim Director General of EMBO’s sister organization EMBL, and was Director of EMBL Heidelberg prior to that appointment.
