EMBO Short-Term Fellowships are now extendable

Heidelberg, 11 June 2018 - Following a change in eligibility criteria, EMBO Short-Term Fellows are now able to extend their research visits for a further 90 days to complete work on a collaborative project or further hone their newly acquired skills.

EMBO Short-Term Fellowships fund research exchanges of up to three months between laboratories in eligible countries. Under the new rules, applicants who were awarded an EMBO Fellowships can choose to stay for an additional three months. EMBO will continue to provide funding for a maximum of 90 days in total, meaning such an extension will have to be funded by the fellow through other means.

“We have made this change to respond to the community’s needs,” says David del Alamo, Head of the EMBO Fellowship Programme. “Applicants told us that research visits of up to three months were sometimes not long enough to complete the work they were hoping to do. Under the new rules scientists are able to extend their laboratory visits without compromising their eligibility to receive the financial support an EMBO Short-Term Fellowship offers.”

Researchers do not need to specifically apply for a research exchange longer than three months. Should the need for an extension arise while they are in the host laboratory, they should simply inform EMBO of the prolonged stay.

Short-Term Fellowships facilitate valuable collaborations with research groups applying techniques that are unavailable in the applicant's laboratory. Through offering the possibility to extend such a visit, EMBO aims to make such a research exchange as valuable as possible for the life science community.
