EMBO take SmartFigures to the ASCB Meeting 2016

EMBO at the ASCB Meeting 2016

Heidelberg, 29 November 2016 - Following the launch of the SmartFigures Lab at The EMBO Meeting 2016, a team from EMBO will be present at the ASCB Annual Meeting 2016 to give delegates in the USA hands-on experience of SmartFigures and demonstrate how this project makes scientific data discoverable.

SmartFigures are part of the SourceData platform, developed at EMBO. SourceData is an open platform designed to allow life scientists to share figures and their underlying source data in a way that is machine-readable. This makes it possible to search and link related results from different publications. SmartFigures are enhanced scientific figures that display data in the context of highly related results published in other papers. They offer an enhanced browsing experience by enabling users to navigate intuitively across papers through a network of connected figures and by linking the data to major biological databases. SmartFigures can be embedded in electronic journal articles and present each figure as a downloadable package that can contain both the image and its underlying data.

SourceData is developed in collaboration with the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics and the SmartFigures Lab is a joint project of EMBO and their publishing partner John Wiley and Sons. The website is openly accessible and gives users the opportunity to interact with SmartFigures embedded in real journal articles as well as to feed back their views to the development team.

The ASCB Annual Meeting 2016 will be held at the Moscone Center, San Francisco, California from 3rd to 7th December 2016. The meeting, organized by the American Society for Cell Biology, will focus on the latest discoveries in the field of cell biology and on building links from fundamental research to clinical issues.
