Celebrating 50 years of European Molecular Biology Conference (EMBC)

On 13 February 1969, three countries initially signed the EMBC agreement. This year, EMBC celebrates its 50th anniversary.

The momentum for establishing EMBO and the EMBC came from a group of molecular biologists with a European vision. The Nobel laureates Max Perutz, Sydney Brenner, John Kendrew and molecular biologist and physicists were among them. Their aim was to create a profile for this new discipline that was independent from national agendas.

Today, 30 countries make up the international and independent funding body EMBC. Using the funds provided by the EMBC, EMBO executes its programmes. Associate Members States and cooperation partners enlarge EMBO’s reach beyond Europe. And the community keeps growing.
