promoting the scientific leaders of tomorrow

The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) has launched the Strategic Development Installation Grants to help researchers set up laboratories in a member state of the EMBC, EMBO’s intergovernmental funding body.

Building on the successful 2005 EMBO/HHMI Startup Grants, the aim of the new scheme is to encourage qualified researchers to set up independent laboratories in participating countries. The scheme is entirely funded by the participating EMBC member states and successful applicants receive an annual support of €50,000.

At present Croatia, the Czech Republic, Portugal, Poland and Turkey are signatories with additional member states expressing an interest to join in the near future. Each participating country sets an upper limit to the number of grants available per year.

The scheme will be administered by the EMBO Young Investigator Programme. Institutions and successful job candidates apply together to gain funding beyond normal start up packages. The commitment and support of the receiving institute during and beyond the tenure of the grant is regarded as an essential part of the grant scheme and is meant to ensure continued support of the academic career of the recipient.

The grants will have an annual application date.
This year’s application date is 15 July 2006, in future this will be 15 April.

EMBO will administer the annual distribution of grants to the recipients. Successful applicants will be eligible to apply to the EMBO Young Investigator Programme once they meet existing requirements.
