Course Outline

The course comprises of:

Six tutorials (pairs of two held in parallel). The tutorials will address practical problems, such as fluorescence microscopy, protein structure prediction, analysis of protein structure or provide a lecture and discussion forum on structural biology, omics and physics meets biology.
For practical problems, tutorial teachers will give a 30 - 45 minute introduction, followed by discussion.
The lecture will be 60 min with 30 min for discussion. Students should come with practical problems related to their research.

A morning session on Writing/Talking Science.

Lectures in compartments and trafficking, signaling cascades, regulation of gene expression, structure and function, cell-cell signaling, cellular networks, systems biology, bioinformatics, evolution and development and molecular medicine.

A journal club-like presentation of a scientific paper

A 3-minute oral presentation of posters by participating students.

A written exercise in the form of either writing a scientific paper or an independent research proposal. The exercises will be reviewed with the course teachers.

Dinner and an evening out in Heidelberg.

Participating students are expected to:

Present a paper of their choice from a pool of 60 papers in a journal-club like setting.

Prepare a poster and a short presentation of their research.

Prepare questions for the tutorials of their choice.

Prepare one of the following, please note that either a paper writing exercise or independent research proposal should be sent back to us by 19 August 2005 as an email attachment:
I. a paper writing exercise - Students should write up their poster / research in the form of a primary research manuscript. The manuscript should be limited to 3000 words and 3 figures, adhering to a modified Current Biology reports format.

II. an independent research proposal - Students are asked to write a research proposal unrelated to their current research. The aim of this exercise is to prepare students for writing a fellowship proposal. The proposal is limited to 2000 words and may not include figure or tables.

Application
A total of 36 Students from EMBO Young Investigator labs will be selected to participate in the course. The next deadline for applications will be 30 April 2005.

Selection
The PhD course committee (Christian Ungermann, Bassem Hassan, Ildiko Szabo and Daniel Otzen) score the applications and make their final selections in May 2005. Successful applicants will be informed via email.

Participation details
The course is open to the selected PhD students of EMBO Young Investigators. Accommodation and meals are covered for PhD students from EMBO Young Investigator labs.
