The EMBO Laboratory Management Courses go abroad

EMBO is organizing the first lab management courses outside of its headquarters in Heidelberg, Germany. In a collaborative effort of the Cancer Research UK, WT Sanger, MRC, ICR and EMBL, a first course is being programmed in Cambridge in June. This move will not only save the participating scientists travel time, but also be a good occasion to foster new collaborations with other young group leaders from all over Europe.

Sarah Burns (Learning and Development Manager for Science from the Cancer Research UK) and her colleagues have formed a consortium that aims to consolidate professional skills training available to scientists and administrators working in their institutes. The individual members of the consortium have put together over 150 different courses so far. High demand and extremely positive feedback from UK scientists who had previously participated in the EMBO course in Heidelberg made it an obvious next step to get the course to be taught in Cambridge by the same tried and trusted trainer teams. The courses have been developed by scientists for scientists, specifically addressing issues such as leadership, communication, team development and hiring of staff as well as conflict solving in a laboratory setting.

The first course is scheduled to take place from 24 – 27 June in Cambridge. Participation is open to all independent group leaders.
