EMBO/HHMI
strengthen research in Central Europe
promoting the
scientific leaders of tomorrow
In 2002 The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO)
and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI)
launched a joint initiative in support of young independent scientists
in Central Europe. This initiative is co-ordinated by the EMBO Young
Investigator Programme.
Within the framework of its international programme HHMI awarded nearly
$2 million to the EMBO to help launch promising scientific careers in
Central Europe. The grant has been used to support EMBO/HHMI Young investigators
and scientists in the Czech Republic, Hungry and Poland. This activity
was discontinued in favour of EMBO/HHMI Startup grants. Joint EMBO and
HHMI activities include a series of meetings for Central European Scientists
to support and promote science.
In the future the Startup Grants will be continued as the Strategic
Development Installation Grants. Funding will come from the participating
member states.
