Conference Programme

Statements arising from the EMBO/EMBL Conference on Science & Security

Previous events

Statements arising from the EMBO/EMBL Conference on Science & Security, held on 28 - 29 October 2005

The organisers identify two important points of concern arising from presentations and discussions at the conference:

1. The scientific community must engage actively in the discussions on regulations related to biological experiments that could generate new dangers or new opportunities for misuse.

2. There is an urgent need to strengthen the dialogue between life scientists, politicians and law-makers. This is necessary in order to ensure that any policy actions taken in relation to security and biological research are well informed, and that the beneficial consequences from research (e.g. improved health care or a greater understanding of living systems) are not hindered unintentionally.
