Divided into three sections, it is designed to inform not only the molecular biologist, but also those interested in the current dialogue on the relationship between science and society.
The Science & Society section features essays and articles on topics beyond the realms of scientific research. The articles provide commentary and analysis on the impact of politics, industry, finance and society on the environment in which scientific research is carried out – as well as considering the consequences of biological research for society. Article formats include:
- Editorials – insights from the editors
- Correspondence – response and commentary
- Book reviews – critiques of current publications
- Viewpoints – expert opinion
- Analysis – journalistic perspectives

The Reviews section condenses the vast amount of information presented in the scientific literature into concise articles. These articles are written by leading experts in the field and presented in four formats:
- Reviews – concise updates on rapidly changing fields
- Concepts – reviews with an eye to the future
- Meeting reports – the latest developments from recent conferences
- Literature reports – highlights of important papers
