About

The EMBO Molecular Medicine Sabbaticals are established to encourage collaborations between clinicians and research scientists and to support clinicians who wish to visit basic research laboratories in a different EMBC Member State.

Molecular Medicine Sabbaticals are not awarded for exchanges within the same country and are intended for joint research work rather than consultations. The sabbaticals cover travel plus subsistence of the clinician only and not of any dependents.

Eligibility

Clinicians who wish to carry out a research project in a basic science laboratory. Preference will be given to clinicians who are still in their training/clinical specialization period.

All applications must involve an institution of origin and a receiving institution in the EMBC Member States. The application must involve movement between countries. International laboratories such as EMBL are technically extraterritorial and movement e.g. from Germany to EMBL Heidelberg is, therefore, permitted.

Applications which are presented as a means of training in a technique rather than as a component of a research project tend to receive lower priority from reviewers. EMBO does not consider applications for sabbaticals to prolong visits begun under other auspices, or as bridging fellowships between, or prior to, long term stays funded by EMBO or other organizations. On completion of the sabbatical applicants must return to their home institution.

Application

Application for EMBO Molecular Medicine Sabbatical is online only. NO hard copies are required. The applicant must provide the names and addresses of two referees (not from receiving institute) who are required to send a confidential letter of reference to the EMBO Fellowship office by post. The proposed receiving institute must submit an acceptance form by post.

The application process is handled via the online applications system.

Next deadline is 1 August 2009.

Selection

Applications are refereed by a panel of EMBO Members with experience and interest in the area of Molecular Medicine. The reviewers are asked to judge the quality of the candidate, the research project and the receiving laboratory but the major criterion deciding whether or not to award a fellowship will be the projected benefit to the home institution of the applicant. It is considered favourable when the proposed fellowship helps to establish, continue or intensify a long-term collaboration between the applicant's home institution and host laboratory.
As soon as a decision is reached, normally within three months from application, all applicants are promptly informed.

Benefits

Duration of support

Molecular Medicine Sabbatical are intended for visits of six months up to twelve months duration.

Travel cost and stipend

The sabbaticals cover travel plus subsistence of the fellow only and not of any dependents.

End of fellowship report

Please note that you need to indicate your AMMF number and your current address on your end report!

At the end of your sabbatical you are asked to provide EMBO with a report of your activity at the receiving institute. There is no deadline for our receipt of your end report, which should be addressed to Dr Jan Taplick, EMBO Fellowship Programme Manager. It is requested however, that you forward your end report as soon as convenient after completion of your sabbatical. Ideally, your end report should be a minimum of one double-sided A4 sheet, detailing your research objectives and results and further work to be undertaken. You may include in your end report diagrams, charts or illustrations to enhance your report. An acknowledgment will be sent by the EMBO Fellowship office on receipt of your end report. The attestation will include the date and duration of your sabbatical, the place you held your sabbatical, your AMMF number and your project title.
