Scientific organizations unite to influence science policy and promote the European Research Council (ERC)

 

Conference on European Research Council (ERC)

 

Heidelberg, 5 November 2004 - On 25-26 October 2004, UNESCO will host a conference in Paris on the European Research Council (ERC), a new funding mechanism for basic research at the European level that should be funded through the EC Framework Programme. This event comes only a few weeks ahead of the European Council meeting where the EU heads of state and government are scheduled to decide upon the creation of the ERC.

UK scientist and children’s author wins EMBO Award for Communications 2004

 

Heidelberg, 5 November 2004 - Fran Balkwill, Professor of Cancer Biology at the Barts & The London, Queen Mary’s Medical School, is the 2004 winner of the EMBO Award for Communication in the Life Sciences. Balkwill receives the award in recognition of her outstanding contribution to science communication for children. The cancer researcher has authored 13 children’s books, all imaginatively illustrated by Mic Rolph. The books take a novel look at a range of topics from genetics to HIV and AIDS. Balkwill is also the Director of the ‘Centre of the Cell’, an exciting new interactive bioscience centre in London’s East End.

EMBO Gold Medal 2004 goes to Spanish scientist, María Blasco

 

Heidelberg, 29 September 2004 - The 2004 winner of the EMBO Gold Medal is María Blasco, Director of the Molecular Oncology Program at the Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Oncológicas (CNIO) in Madrid. The EMBO Gold Medal is awarded annually to an outstanding young scientist for exceptional research carried out within Europe. Maria Blasco receives the award in recognition of her landmark work in the area of telomeres. The scientist’s research has had a groundbreaking impact on cancer research and received wide recognition in the field. The medal will be presented to the winner at this year's EMBO Members Meeting, “Frontiers of Molecular Biology”, in Vienna.

Winner of 2004 EMBO Science Writing Prize announced

 

Heidelberg, 30 August 2004 - The winner of the 2004 EMBO Science Writing Prize is Matthew Bottomley of the Istituto di Ricerche di Biologia Molecolare in Rome, Italy. The winning piece, entitled “From Hawaii with Love”, takes a novel and entertaining look at the use of quorum-sensing systems in transcriptional regulation of bacteria.

EMBO fellowships extend eligibility criteria to promote equal opportunities

 

Heidelberg, 20 July 2004 - The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) today announced pioneering new eligibility criteria for its long-term and short-term fellowships. The new criteria cater for applicants with childcare commitments and scientists returning to work after a career break for childcare reasons. Further amendments aim to attract applicants from outside Europe and to encourage international mobility and collaboration.

The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) turns 40

 

Heidelberg, 18 June 2004 - The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) this weekend celebrated its 40th anniversary. Leading scientists from all over Europe – amongst them 5 Nobel Laureates and GlaxoSmithKline Senior Vice President of Discovery Research – flew in to EMBO’s Heidelberg base in Germany to take part in the celebrations; all of them honoured EMBO members. Many more sent messages of congratulations.
