The Way Forward
The Way Forward brought together scientists, politicians and other decision-makers, the aim was to inspire participants to take action that will help attract women into science and keep them there. The conference signposted the way forward, providing participants with ideas and tools to improve their own working environment. The overriding focus of the three-day conference was to move forward and find concrete ways to improve the prospects of women working in science. Presentations took a constructive look at the current situation - evaluating progress, identifying good practice and showcasing initiatives that have a positive impact on the working environment of women scientists. The meeting comprised of four sessions: "Successful initiatives in the spotlight", "Committees as gatekeepers", "What can politics do?" and "Changing institutional culture". The first session, "Successful initiatives in the spotlight", presented programmes and initiatives that promote women in Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) via a series of selected talks at the lively bazaar. Proceedings from the conference are available as a brochure summarizing the contents. We encourage the use of the material in the effort to raise awareness of the situation of women in science at institutional workshops, as career advice and as training material for committees and science leaders.
The conference “Women in Science: The Way Forward” was organized within SET-Routes, a project to encourage more girls and women to study and work in Science, Engineering and Technology (SET). |
