EMBO Leadership Workshop for Senior Scientists

8-10 July 2008
Heidelberg, Germany

Running a lab is about more than just good science.

Senior scientists need well-developed management and leadership skills to complement their scientific acumen in order to strategically lead their teams of scientists with vision and to respond to institutional demands.

The first EMBO Leadership Workshop for Senior Scientists is a response to requests from EMBO members seeking an improved ability to lead, co-ordinate, oversee and manage their various roles. Scientists will gain an awareness of leadership skills, knowledge of specific management tools, practical experience through role-plays and have opportunity to discuss with colleagues sharing similar responsibilities.

The workshop programme will call on case studies from attending scientists and for this reason will be limited to 5-7 participants. Role-play and interactive discussions, accompanied by short theoretical input, will allow scientists to develop skills to help them arrive at workable management solutions within each topic area.

Workshop topics include:
- Leadership style
- Team development and dynamics
- Organisational DNA: impact on vision and strategy
- Communication
- Conflict management and negotiation

An experienced management trainer and former research mathematician, CJ Fitzsimons from Metis Leadership, will lead the workshop. CJ Fitzsimons has more than 15 years experience in helping scientists and managers in industry develop leadership skills and, together with EMBO, co-developed the successful EMBO Laboratory Management Courses for junior group leaders.
