EMBO Award for Communication
in the Life Sciences
The European Molecular Biology Organization launched this award in
2002 in order to give recognition to the huge efforts that some scientists
make to communicate their science to the public while remaining fully
active in research.
The winners of the EMBO Award are nominated for the EC Prize for Science Communication.
Award description
A practising life scientist will receive the EMBO Award for Communication in the Life Sciences for outstanding work in the area of science communication to the public.
Prize
The winner will be awarded 5,000 euro, accompanied by a silver and gold medal inscribed with the winner’s name.
Eligibility
- Eligible are scientists working in Europe or Israel at the time of application who have made an outstanding contribution to the communication of science to a non-scientific audience via any medium or activity.
- Candidates must be working in active research at the time of application and should have done most of their communication work in Europe or Israel.
- If written works are to be judged with the application, these must have been published in printed form by the time of nomination. At least one work must have been published in the period 2005 – 2007.
- Scientists who are already widely regarded as professional communicators will not be considered for the award. Rather the award is intended for scientists who have, while remaining active in laboratory research, risen to the challenge of communicating science to a non-scientific audience.
Entry procedure
Entry is by self-application or nomination by a third party not directly involved in the work to be judged. Nomination can only be made with the candidate’s approval.
