EMBO actions are directed and guided by members who are leaders within their fields and recognized for research excellence.
Management
Professor Maria Leptin is Director of EMBO, leading the execution of strategies that promote excellence in molecular life sciences. Professor Leptin was honoured with EMBO membership in 1996. She has served as chair of the EMBO Membership Committee (2005 – 2007), as a member of the EMBO Membership & Publications Committee (2002 – 2004) and was elected to EMBO Council in 2008.
The Deputy Director – Gerlind Wallon, PhD – supports the Director along with a team of managers for key programmes, activities and publications.

EMBO Council
EMBO Council is the governing body of EMBO, responsible for ensuring the development of the organization. It consists of 15 members, who serve for a period of three years and who may be re-elected for one additional term of office. The current Chair of EMBO Council is Ari Helenius and the Vice-Chair is Richard Treisman. The Secretary General of EMBO is Anton J. Berns.

The European Molecular Biology Conference (EMBC) 
, an intergovernmental organization comprising 27 member states, is the major funding body of EMBO. A common commitment to quality research at the European level drives both EMBC and EMBO.
