Since 1994, EMBO has offered its services as an advisory and review body to EMBC member states – carrying out quality reviews of national research programmes.

EMBO appoints an expert panel of EMBO members to carry out these reviews and analyse the strengths and weaknesses of the individual science programmes. Each review results in a comprehensive report of comments and recommendations, which is issued to the national research councils or ministries responsible for the programme under review.

Since 1994, EMBO has carried out quality reviews of Austria's biochemistry and biotechnology programmes, the national science programmes of Finland and Hungary and the French Genopole System.

Most recently, EMBO was asked to review various units in the Spanish National Research Council’s (CSIC) life sciences programme. An assessment in 2005 of the Spanish National Biotechnology Centre (CNB) in Madrid, one of the largest units in the CSIC, was followed by a broader more strategic look at the CSIC’s life sciences institutes.

CNB review

The conclusions of the review panel were extremely positive placing CNB research at the forefront of European and world science. The final report also made recommendations for possible actions to optimise the CNB’s research programmes.

Review of CSIC life sciences institutes

The EMBO review assessed the strategy of 19 institutes in order to gain an overall impression of the CSIC’s collective strategy in the area of the life sciences.
