EMBO welcomes fifty leading scientists as members
Heidelberg, 14 November 2007

The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) announced today the election of 50 leading scientists to its membership. These new EMBO Members join a community of over 1,300 members in Europe and more than 80 associate members worldwide.

Election as an EMBO Member is a tribute to the significant contribution to the advancement of science made by each of these researchers. EMBO elects new members annually on the basis of scientific excellence.

The latest scientists to join EMBO come from 16 different countries and represent a broad cross-section of the worldwide molecular life sciences community. Forty-two of the new members are based in Europe and neighbouring countries, while eight distinguished scientists from Australia, India and the USA receive the special honour of associate membership.

“EMBO Members contribute in numerous ways to the organisation’s activities and are integral to our international reputation for promoting excellence in molecular biology. We welcome these 50 exceptional scientists to the EMBO community and look forward to their input,” said Hermann Bujard, EMBO Executive Director.

Once elected, EMBO Members provide scientific input to the organisation, may participate in committees that guide the execution of EMBO activities, have the opportunity to mentor young scientists and may nominate candidates for the annual membership elections. Their valuable contribution maintains the high standards of scientific excellence EMBO has upheld since its foundation in 1964.

New EMBO Members and Associate Members are invited to present on their research and to network with other EMBO Members at the 2008 EMBO Members Workshop – Frontiers of Molecular Biology to be held in Tampere, Finland from 5 to 8 September.
