Since 1994, EMBO has offered its services as an advisory and review body to EMBC member states – carrying out quality reviews of national research programmes. Most recently, EMBO was asked to review the Spanish National Biotechnology Centre (Centro Nacional de Biotecnología or CNB) in Madrid, one of the largest units in the programmes of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). EMBO appointed a expert panel of ten EMBO members to carry out the review, headed up by leading researcher, Moshe Yaniv. The conclusions of the reviewers were extremely positive placing CNB research at the “forefront of European and world science”. The final report also made recommendations for possible actions to optimise the CNB’s research programmes.
